Bernie Sanders Thinks the US Workweek Should Be Shortened From Five Days To Four
But is he right?
Senator Bernie Sanders believes it's time for the US workweek to be shortened from five days to four — with no reduction in pay.
On the 21st of February, he sent a tweet, after seeing the results of a four-day workweek pilot recently held in the United Kingdom:
The six-month trial consisted of 61 companies, more than 3,000 employees, and was based on a 10:80:100 model. 100% of pay for 80% of the time, in exchange for a commitment from staff to maintain 100% productivity.
The trial improved employee well-being, productivity, and retention, with no loss in productivity
The results of the trial are promising. Surveys of staff taken before and after found that 39% were less stressed, 54% found it easier to balance work and home responsibilities, and the number of sick days taken during the trial fell by 66%.
Staff retention also improved — 57% fewer staff left the firms taking part compared to the same period a year earlier.
