Several months back, I got a questionnaire from an MSc student to fill out a form about remote work.

I guess her thesis was around remote work. But from my perspective, it was a mess.

She confused remote work with digital nomadism, and confused freelancing with them too. And each of these is very different.

So, this post is to explain as simply as possible some key things in remote work:

1. Remote work is NOT work from home

Yes, you can work from home when you work remotely. But that is just a tiny subset of remote work.

The idea of remote work is that work gets done without you being in an office or a pre-designated physical space.

I work remotely, and I mostly work from home. I have a home office. But I can work from anywhere I want. What matters to the job is that the work gets done in an excellent way and the required outcome is generated.

2. Not all remote workers are digital nomads

I work remotely, and I am not a digital nomad. Digital nomads are people who travel from place to place.
