When I first applied for university and jobs, I well remember listing every extracurricular activity I could think of. The watchword for my generation when getting into university or the workforce was “well-rounded.”

Then, as computers and technology took over, specialization and certification in ever narrower skills areas became the requirement. The trick then was to learn a very specific programming language or management trend and leverage that knowledge into a lucrative career.

But is the hot trend now edging back towards more broad areas of knowledge? Is being well-rounded the new, old thing?

Education Is Constantly Changing

Change in the education and curriculum worlds comes slowly. Years ago, when educational specialists first became alarmed that high school and university graduates did not have the technical skills necessary to succeed in a tech-driven world, they amped up STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs everywhere.

Tops on the list was a focus on coding and programming.
