Simply put careers as we know them are changing. People are taking on more careers, and jobs, in their lifetimes. This trend is a wake-up call for anyone and everyone who is pursuing a lifelong career, because 35% of employees have changed jobs within the last three years, and by the year 2050, most workers will have worked 14 different jobs by the age of 40. These two statistics alone show how we all need to be flexible and cognizant of our choices and decisions in order to ensure that we have a both successful and enjoyable career. Career Coaches may be that answer for you. They not only help you understand what is happening in your career but can also help you to develop the skills you need to ensure that no matter what the circumstances you can handle and be successful in anything you pursue. In this blog, we will explore whether or not they can live up to the hype.

Due to the shift away from traditional, linear, careers, we have seen that being a loyal and devoted employee no longer secures you stability in your career. It has become much more beneficial to be flexible and passionate in order to maintain your trajectory through your career. This is because careers no longer need to be a one company, one job, or one industry thing anymore. In the past careers depended on what your parents did or what your first job was. You would follow in your father’s footsteps to be a lawyer, or you would graduate college and settle into being an accountant. Now the world is smaller, more connected, and people can develop skills over a life time, and apply what they have learned to a new career or position in their late 40’s or 50’s; completely turning what we all believed to be career law upside down. While this sounds promising and exciting, there are still many things in everyone’s way, and there is no uniformity to it. You have experienced a long bout of unemployment, a long stint as a stay at home parent, or even just the inability to understand and know what you want to do. These challenges and roadblocks can seem impossible to overcome for some, and for others, they may just be the fire you need to launch yourself forward, but without the identification and push most people will not go out and capitalize on this new career landscape.

Thankfully career coaches are around to help you break through these barriers. In this new landscape, we can all hope for a fairy god mother to show up and fix all of our woes, but the reality is that careers are hard work and that fairy godmother does not exist just to wave her wand and fix everything. Career coaches are the answer though. They may not have a wand, but they have access to a wealth of knowledge, experience, and technology that can not only help you figure out what is the best move for you, but also provide you with the tools you need to be the person in charge of their career path.

Your next thought may be why can’t I just utilize my experiences, my knowledge, and use this technology on my own? However, it is very important to understand that while you may have experienced a long and successful career, and you are just facing a small patch of bad luck, that does not matter. It is very important to know that while you may be seasoned having someone take a bird’s eye view of your career and interpret it with an impartial and well-supported view can relieve things that you had no idea existed. Career coaches are, for the most part; I cannot speak for everyone, doing what they do because they genuinely enjoy helping people, and that makes them worth your time, effort, and money. They really just want what is best for you, and they can help you unlock the potential to embark on a long and happy career.

Overall, I hope this has given you some insight into whether or not career coaches are worth it. I truly hope that you can see that each and every one of us is trying to do the same thing in life, achieve a work-life balance that lets us feel fulfilled and without regrets when all is said and done. Career coaching can help you achieve that end goal and enjoy the journey while you are on it.
