The End Is Not Near, You Need A Resume

Just recently I was out with some dear friends who are about to retire within the next few years. They were talking about things they wish they had changed in their career. As I sat there listening I thought, we are all in the part of our life to where we are able to retire, but not necessarily quit working.

The grind was real. But now, you have the chance to make your life, YOUR life. This all begins with the right attitude shift. You can sit there are complain about your situation, wish you had made changes years ago or, you can make the changes now.

Changing careers after retirement, especially if you’ve been in the same position for 25 to 30 years can be hard. It’s hard because you have completely lost touch with the way things are working now.

Things have changed so much! When I first entered the workforce in the 90s, I didn’t have to write a cover letter. All I had to do was to make sure the resume was on point.

Now, you have to do a resume AND a cover letter. What the heck is a cover letter anyway? Why do you need it? And, how do you write one? I have a free download if you are wondering about any of those questions. You can click here for the free ebook.

However, having all of this is still not enough for entering the job market now. You need social proof, which could be LinkedIn, which is basically for professional branding, as well as other social media outlets.

But then there’s Google. Yeah, Google is cool for researching the nearest restaurant or, my today’s Google search, my water bill company because I forgot to pay it earlier this month and just remembered.

But anyway, you should probably Google yourself, just to see what pops up. You might be pretty surprised. Especially if there’s something that you don’t think is appealing for branding yourself.

Then the resume itself has changed. Just the meer fact that you’re older, do you want to put that you graduated from college 25 years go when you are applying to a 20 something job? How do you show you know your stuff and are a valuable asset and not just, old?

Yes, resumes have changed format, language, what to put and what not to, which email (oh, yeah, there were no emails back then) and which phone number, home or mobile, that’s a serious question now?

You see, just having the right resume is not going to cut it anymore. There’s more to it than just completing the application and turning in the resume.

Things have changed and in order to stay competitive, you’ve got to roll with the changes. If you are in this situation of nearing retirement, but want to continue to work, AND you’re totally confused about how to navigate through this jungle of finding the right job, connect with me and I’ll help you.

Fortunately, thousands if not millions of people have changed jobs successfully after retirement. I have personal proof, my dad retired 3 times. If it’s what you want, get your mindset right and get going.
