Where’s Your Port?

“If a man doesn’t know what port he’s steering for, no wind is favorable to him.” Seneca

So many people say they want certain things but don’t do anything to get them there. And, we all know, talk is cheap. Talking and not actually doing wastes so much time, robs the world of so many cool inventions, authors, producers and just great people.

Just Do

To get started, it’s best to just do. Stop talking and do. Find a way to figure out how to do the thing you want to do. Talk to people doing what you think you want to do.

This type of talking will get you where you want to be. Join a networking group, get in there and really see if this is what you want. If you hear things that you know you would not want to do, ask yourself, can I hire that part out to a professional, and or, is this a game changer. Do I need to change my direction with the thought of what I want.

Time To Think

Now, you need to spend some time thinking. In a quiet place. You can’t think when there’s a lot of noise. Your brain can’t calibrate and help you get an answer.

If during this thinking time you decide you want to change your mind, or direction of where you want to go, then do it. Something WILL happen to point you in the right direction of your, “port”.

When Christopher Columbus set sail for India, that was the direction he was aiming for. However, we all now know, that’s not where he ended up. This happens with purposes and life’s calling. You may set your sail for one purpose, but a change in the wind direction, i.e. new idea, invention, new way of doing things, moves you into another.

This is good. I’m sure Christopher didn’t get pissed off when he landed on a much larger place than anticipated. North America. India. Which is larger?

If once you set sail, you decide you no longer want to go in that direction, or the wind naturally moves you to a new port, it is okay. Changing your mind is not the end of the world. Actually, the world would probably thank you for it. Trust yourself. Trust your gut. Get “In Tune” with your true direction and make moves toward it.

Wondering how to figure out which port you should aim for?

You know what makes you happy. Even people who claim they don’t. They know. For me, I’m happiest when writing, reading, napping. There are others who would rather slit a wrist than write, read or take a nap.

That’s fine. Going to a bookstore, library or coffee shop makes my heart leap for joy. There are things that make other’s hearts leap with joy. You just have to figure it out what’s yours.

Get a grip on your strengths. Your strengths are what you do naturally. I am naturally strong in writing, researching and helping people. Those strengths, help you figure out the direction of your port. Allow them to help you create an income for yourself.

Start now. Start doing something. Stop talking about what you are going to do and just do. Set your mind on the port you want and do something to get there.
