As someone who graduated from university in 2020 in the midst of a pandemic, life has not been smooth sailing. I was inundated with many fears, uncertain of what career pathways would suit me and how to get there. There were many long nights of staring mindlessly at LinkedIn and other career websites, trying to better understand the jobs in the market and what they were about. In hindsight, I regretted not doing my research before graduation and preparing for the next stage of my life.

One day when I was scrolling through TikTok, I was thrown into a community that I’d never been exposed to, #corporatetiktok. Some of the posts were satirical commentaries about the working world, while others were informative and educational. I then realised the limitless potential that social media has as an educational tool.

If you are finding it hard to digest the absolute reams of career advice out there, here are some of my favourite YouTubers you can watch over dinner or while doing chores!

1. Andrew LaCivita

Having worked as an executive recruiter, LaCivita has consulted for more than 200 companies and has helped over 600 people. LaCivita is a world-leading career coach, trainer, blogger, and speaker. He is also an award-winning author of three books, including The Hiring Prophecies and Interview Intervention.

His content remains relevant, and he provides detailed explanations on how one can navigate the corporate world. Some of his videos may be lengthy but it is definitely well worth the watch. If you are pressed for time, he also has shorter videos regarding the job hunt.

2. Ali Abdaal

Abdaal is a doctor, YouTuber and podcaster whose YouTube channel is aimed at helping people lead happier and more productive lives. His videos range from self-help and motivation to his own experiences working in the corporate world.

Abdaal is honest with his comments on the kind of experiences he had. His authentic sharing is something that I personally enjoy watching and learning more about.

3. Madeline Mann

Mann is the person behind Self Made Millennial, a YouTube channel geared towards job search advice. Her channel has been featured on multiple media publications such as Business Insider and Newsweek.

Mann is a seasoned HR recruiter and her videos are primarily based on the insider knowledge that she has gained over the years.

4. Andrew Fennell

Fennell has a well-established record of being a former recruiter consultant and being the founder of standout-cv.com, one of the UK’s largest CV advice websites. He frequently contributes to websites like the Guardian and CV-Library.

As someone who had no clue what constitutes a great CV and how to present my contributions in a manner that matters to prospective employers, Fennell’s videos provide step-by-step instructions on CV writing and interview techniques that can help anyone land their dream job.

5. Jen Hood

Hood is the owner of Avant Analytics, an analytics consulting company, and The Career Force, a website that provides analytic skills and career training.

Her channel provides a mix of hands-on tutorials and industry insights that are helpful if you are looking into which industry to join. She also answers any misconceptions and questions about the hiring process.

I hope that this guide will clear up some uncertainties about the workforce. For more in-depth career advice, head on over to CareerContact, for learning opportunities for pre-university students in Singapore looking to intern or pick up some digital skills like digital marketing or UX/UI design.
