Enhancing your skillset by Give A Grad A Go

With graduate jobs being more competitive than ever, it’s crucial you’re showcasing to employers that you possess the right skills to be able to thrive in their role and make a real impact on the company.

One of the best ways to improve your chances of securing a graduate job, is to enhance your skillset and learn new skills that are valuable in many of the roles you’re applying to. Here are some of our top ways to enhance your skillset and boost your employability:

Know the skills you need to gain

One of the most important factors to consider when looking to enhance your skillset, is deciding on what skills you need to gain. The first step to this is knowing what industry you want to pursue, and what skills are heavily required for a lot of roles within this industry.

Companies looking to hire Marketers might want creative and analytical skills. Meanwhile, companies looking to hire a Salesperson might favour candidates who are confident and persuasive.

Look at the job descriptions for similar roles you’re applying to and highlight the key skills required. Then read over your graduate CV and compare, ask yourself if you have the majority of these skills? Or do you lack in certain areas? This will allow you to see what experience you need to gain and which skills to enhance.

If, like many students you’re unsure on the career path you’d like to follow, it’s a good idea to build on your transferable soft skills such as communication abilities, office 365 knowledge and teamwork skills. To help you decide which career path is best suited to you, take part in our career test for graduates.

Build up an array of skills whilst at University

Attending University is a fantastic and invaluable opportunity, not only to secure a degree, but to also boost your employability and learn new skills. It’s important to make sure you’re using the opportunities University offers to the fullest, to stand yourself in a great position when it comes to applying to graduate jobs after graduating.

Joining a society and sports team are fantastic ways to develop some great soft skills, but if you’re looking to standout with your applications, explore the options University has further and actively look to take up positions of responsibility in these societies.

For example, if you want to pursue a career in Finance, put yourself forward to be your club’s treasurer, or if you need to build your management skills, try to secure a senior role in your club/society where you’ll be managing others.

Volunteering in your local community is also a fantastic way to grow your skill-set and expand your network, check out our blog for more reasons how volunteering can boost your employability. Most universities will also offer options to tutor lower years, through programmes such as PASS, which is a great way to gain a variety of skills that employers look for.
