As businesses began to find their feet in the new world, throughout May we celebrated some inspiring projects and initiatives. There was a nod to our NHS heroes with In Good Company’s ‘Posters for the People’ project and North East photographer Christopher Owens showed us how to capture portraits…at a safe distance. Have a read of May’s Cargo Curates round up:

‘Posters for the People’ project brings designers together to celebrate keyworkers

In Good Company’s aim is to bring more art, fun and colour to the streets of Leeds. Their latest project, ‘Posters for the People’ has brought together designers and illustrators from across the UK to create their own posters to celebrate and show support for our frontline workers.

Among the artists is a collaboration between Leeds-based agency, Studio.Build and copywriter Nick Asbury. ‘Conversations Make Rainbows’ draws on the conversations that some of us are having with friends and family through the lockdown.

You can see the full collection and buy a poster here, all donations are split evenly between the artists chosen charities.

Leeds based studio receives two awards for charity branding

Smiths Workshop, a graphic design studio based in Leeds, has won bronze in two categories of the Fresh Awards.

They were awarded bronze in Brand and Illustration categories for their work with Holbeck Together. The project involved new branding, creation of brand guidelines and roll-out of illustrations, print and digital assets.

The concept behind the designs is “the idea of togetherness, with community at its heart”.

North East photographer Christopher Owens continues work during lockdown with virtual shoots

Lockdown has presented challenges for all of us, but what if your job is capturing portraits?

North East photographer Christopher Owens specialises in portraiture for editorial and commercial briefs. He’s worked with clients such as National Portrait Gallery London, The Guardian and, closer to home, heading up the photographic content used throughout the North East Times.

Adapting to the times, he’s embraced technology and has conducted shoots over Whatsapp, FaceTime & Zoom. Photos are captured on the subject’s iPhone before Christopher edits them in Lightroom, balancing the contrast, adding grain and correcting the colours.

Some of the projects he’s taken on over the past few weeks include the front cover for North East Times as seen above and a shoot with Paul Paravanno, Co-Director, Office of Government and Community Relations, MIT. This shoot presented its own unique challenge in that Paul is blind and there were 3000 miles between photographer and subject. The session was conducted via Zoom as part of an ongoing project with NICA (National Innovation Centre for Ageing). “Connecting with a subject in Boston from my dining room in Newcastle and producing images for a major project has been a surprising and rewarding experience,” Christopher said.

Speaking about his new way of work, he says,

“Rather than framing it in a camera, I have to use my knowledge of directing subjects not only to how they are positioned in the portrait but also to place, frame and position the camera (iPhone) at their end.

It’s so much more collaborative which is a lovely element as the subject is very engaged in the process.”

Altogether reveals new brand identity for Snackfully

Newcastle-based creative agency, Altogether has unveiled the new brand identity that they created for Snackfully.

Altogether collaborated with the company, creating them a new brand identity including fresh typography, iconography and designs for their packaging. Due to the current situation, the brand development process was accelerated to bring forward the launch date.

Talking about the project, our Head of Creative Carl said, “We love the use of negative space in the logo and how this has been applied to the key messaging and little animations.”

A great project delivered during challenging times — well done to the Altogether team!
