Why Condemning The Riots Won’t Solve The Problem

As a Chaplain and a member of the clergy I feel I need to speak about this. What is happening in the world is too important to not use even the tiny platform I have to speak out.

These are my observations. I want to listen. I want to learn.

I’m going to borrow an idea from the PREP Strong Bonds curriculum and apply it to some of our current realities. This curriculum is used by Army Chaplains in marriage enrichment training.

When a geyser erupts, you see the massive explosion of water and steam but before the geyser ever got to that point, a lot of other things happened under the surface. Consider this…

The eruption of the geyser is the protests and riots. This is the EVENT that we see. We see these events because they are explosive, kinetic, and sometimes violent. Sometimes we condemn them too for those very reasons. We say, “JUST STOP protesting, looting, and rioting! You aren’t accomplishing anything!” We see the explosion on the top. We RESPOND to the explosion on the top.

But one layer down are the ISSUES that drove that explosion. This is the killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Botham Jean, and so, so many others. Often we are guilty of focusing on the EVENT while ignoring the ISSUES.
