“We have a meeting at 3pm,” the group leader said. He was reminding us of a commitment we had made to a local group of landowners and businessmen. We had the meeting and it went very well.

The context was a rural village in central Africa in the country of Uganda. I was traveling with 13 others to serve at a school and see what we could do to be helpful to the local community.

Our days were filled with playing with children and various work projects. It was edifying to say the least. Within 48 hours, the children had captured our hearts and our entire group can’t wait to get back in a year’s time. How children with so little could be capable of so much… that was the incredible part.

I thought that I could leave my “American effeciency” and time management behind while in Africa. I was wrong.

Throughout our trip, we had various meetings that needed to be scheduled, facilitated and then followed up. We had agendas to create and places to be at particular times. I was grateful for my time management in the midst of this rural village in Africa.

It reminded me that you don’t really leave your time management behind. You take it with you and use it at a moment’s notice.
