Week 2 | Positioning + Repositioning

09.07.20

This last week was not as productive as I had originally planned but I wanted to write a quick update on some of the things I have been reading as well as the activities that I have been conducting to help jumpstart my study.

  1. Class Connections ✏️ — I have been finding a lot of inspiration in the classes that I have this semester including Design Thinking for Complex Systems and The Long Now. Just in the last week, I’ve found the readings relevant to my thoughts around education and long term thinking. Plans to implement a process for capturing these connections by developing timely brief literature reviews for the readings in my classes that are also resonating with my study.
  2. Reading 📘 — I also started reading “Education for the Critical Consciousness” by Paulo Freire. This book has opened up some of my thinking around the philosophy education; including how participating in receiving a formal education can also stifle an individual’s true desires and interests, and the different attitudes and mindsets that lead one to develop a critical consciousness in personal decision making. This text is dense… more to come later!
  3. Flow Chart/Decision Tree 🌲 — I took a stab at the decision tree that was discussed in my last meeting with Stacie outlining the different decisions that a student can make after high school. This exercise was interesting because it ultimately led me to think about how high school guidance counselors are one of the key interactions that students have to help “guide” their next step post-graduation.

Week 2 To Do’s

  • Finalizing Calendar
  • Start the IRB process for Guidance Counselors and High School students. I am thinking I should start emailing Guidance Counselors this week to gauge interest.
  • Gauge interest email
  • Continue reading and develop lit review process

Questions

  • Guidance Counselors — How many should I try recruit to work with?
8–12? What is a good number of test subjects to shoot for?
