Google Trends

This chart shows the increase and decrease in popularity of searches involving three networking platforms over the last decade. Around 2008, Facebook gains popularity as Myspace begins to fall. By 2012, Myspace is obsolete while Facebook is at an all-time high.

As these two platforms competed for the public’s attention and use, Facebook came out on top. As younger people started coming up to speed on the new and better version, they started gravitating towards what was new — leaving Myspace in the dust.

Pie Charts

Pie charts themselves how the breakdown of two different sets of numbers (160 and 40 versus 25 and 6). These number sets both reflect an 80/20 percentage breakdown.

Cairo argues that people are biased towards larger numbers, and may prefer the number set on the left, but in reality these both represent 20 percent. This exercise shows that visuals are a powerful way to cut though individual bias in information processing.

Charts and Ranges

This range plots show the differences between the best and worst quarterback in the NFL in 2018 — Josh Rosen and Drew Brees. Brees took the lead in touchdowns with 32 versus Rosen’s 11. Rosen did however take the lead in sacks with 45 of them and only completed 55 percent of his passes and had a QBR of 66.7.

Overall, Brees is the better quarterback in his 2018 season.

This range chart shows the rise and fall of jobs in America from 1990 to 2017. From 1990 to 1991 there was a drastic decrease in the number of jobs available — approximately 1.5 million jobs. But from 1992 to about 1995, there was an increase of over 5 million jobs. Another recession happened in 2001 to about 2004 where nearly the same amount of jobs diminished as in 1990. And in 2008, America suffered its worst financial and job crisis — over 6 million jobs were lost and were not restored until about 2010.

About once every decade since 1990 there has been a devastating crisis in the workforce. But in between, there has been many plentiful years.
