Han Ming from Mudah.my’s Business Intelligence team

This series takes a peek into what each of our team does across brands in Carousell Group and how they work with the other teams towards our mission of inspiring every person in the world to start selling and buying to make more possible for one another.

In 2019, Han Ming was a financial advisory consultant supporting Mudah.my in the due diligence process during the merger of Carousell and 701Search. He was attracted by the opportunity to create more value within the company in the longer term. “I enjoy creating value and contributing to growing a business. Working in an organisation provides a platform to follow through operationally on the strategy and business plan,” he shared.

An opportunity in the Business Intelligence (BI) team coincidentally opened up at the right time, and he joined as a Senior Business Analyst. His finance background in audit and financial modelling was a natural complement to his current role that involves forecasting and budgeting, including presenting insights and recommendations for the business growth.

The BI team comprises two teams; Data analytics and Revenue analytics. Both teams deliver value to the organisation by translating data into insights to assist various stakeholders to make business decisions. “While we play different roles, we consistently complement each other. We also regularly have cross learning and sharing sessions with the other Carousell Group brands such as Cho Tot and OneKyat. With two co-existing marketplace brands in Malaysia — Mudah.my and Carousell — we have the opportunity to leverage on each other’s data to develop more impactful insights,” said Han Ming.

There is no regular week, as the team is involved in various projects and supports many different business units (or verticals). For some weeks, they focus on reporting and preparing dashboards. Other weeks, they could be performing analysis and making progress on the longer-term initiatives or projects. The team is continuously learning and improving as they explore data from many different angles and perspectives to derive meaningful insights.

Unfortunately, with only 24 hours in a day, there is only so much the team can do. The toughest challenge working in the BI team for Han Ming is prioritisation of initiatives. He said, “The team has many interesting and brilliant ideas that are able to drive a positive impact to the organisation. This is trickier now where prioritisation shifts alongside the ever-changing nature of the pandemic.”

What makes work meaningful is how the BI team is able to drive the mission forward in various ways. “Various work streams and initiatives, ranging from launching of new products or features including UI/UX enhancement, will need some involvement from the BI team to help make success more ‘measurable’. We also support the team in studying and understanding user behaviour so that we can continuously improve the platform to make selling and buying more seamless, and thereby encouraging more people to start selling and buying,” explains Han Ming.

Be a part of our growing team. Find your ideal role, and join us in making more possible, together.
