A Powerful Meditation

There are no shortage of ways to meditate. When most envision meditation, they see the cross-legged monk humming “ohm.” The truth is that meditation has lots of forms and it’s important to remember that it’s not a rigid, defined practice. The stereotypes associated with meditation sometimes aren’t just inaccurate, but can even be harmful. At worst, they can alienate some of the people who might need meditation most.

Meditation can be walks in the forest or walks in a concrete jungle. It can be with or without headphones. Meditation can just be the simple effort to let go of thoughts. Mindfulness can take many forms.

Meditation can be guided, or center around visualization techniques. For those of us who are new to meditation, these approaches can sometimes come a little more easily. There are a few that are helpful for me, but this one is one of my favorites that I’ve found so far. This visualization technique is to picture the ocean. Sometimes it can help to quietly play the sound of a tide pushing and pulling. There are many of these ocean soundtracks available on Apple Music, spotify and youtube.

Ideally in a seated position, what you do then is to allow thoughts to come and go with the tide. You envision all of the problems in your life crashing to shore and then washing away again. You imagine all your troubles, your failed relationships, student…
