15 Irish foodies to follow on Instagram
Chances are if you’re not watching the football or heading to Body & Soul at Ballinlough Castle this weekend, you may well be soaking up the atmosphere at Taste of Dublin in the Iveagh Gardens. To prepare your eyes — unfortunately, we can’t prepare your belly — for all the culinary delights you’re about to experience, here are 15 Irish foodies to follow on Instagram.
1. Clodagh McKenna
Chef, author, restaurateur and TV cook, Clodagh McKenna is a household name on both sides of the Atlantic due to her successful TV cooking shows — Fresh From The Sea and Clodagh’s Irish Food Trails — and it’s easy to see why from her Instagram feed. Mouth-watering fresh Irish food is the order of the day and it all looks pretty delicious to us.
2. The Happy Pear
Probably the most famous twins in Ireland at the moment (yes even more famous than Jedward) David and Stephen Flynn, the duo behind The Happy Pear — which began as a natural food market and café in Greystones, Co. Wicklow and has evolved into a clean-eating way of life — are pretty popular on Instagram. With over 80,000 followers and two cookbooks under their belts, follow the lads if you want to feel wholly inadequate.
3. Donal Skehan
Another young Irish chef making waves abroad is Donal Skehan, who not only has shows on Irish, UK and US TV, but has also managed to amass a significant number of YouTube subscribers — 350,000 worldwide — and 159,000 followers on Instagram. Skehan is pretty prolific on Instagram, but the good news is not only will you get lots of pictures of incredible food, you’ll also get the occasional snap of his dog Max; which is always a good thing.
4. Forkful
Forkful by Aoife McElwain and Mark Duggan is what Instagram is made for: incredibly styled and photographed food, that looks more like a work of art than your dinner. While the duo normally make videos for clients, including Glenisk, on their website, their Instagram account is the place to go when you’re chewing on your ham and cheese toasty dreaming of a more beautiful life.
5. Lilly Higgins
Let them eat cake … but only if it’s made by Lilly Higgins. A Ballymaloe trained chef, Higgins is the author of two books — Make, Bake, Love and Lilly Higgins’ Dream Deli — writes a regular column for The Irish Times and was a judge on The Great Irish Bake Off 2015. In short, she may well be the Irish Mary Berry. Follow her on Instagram and droll over her incredible creations.
6. Dee Laffan
Want to know where to eat out in Ireland? Look no further than food journalist and editor Dee Laffan on Instagram. Keep an eye out for her #highlyrecommended selections, from gastropubs to Michelin star restaurants; you’re sure to find a gem in no time.
7. Fallon & Byrne
Most Dublin-based food and wine aficionados are already big fans of Fallon & Byrne, the D2-based food hall, restaurant and wine cellar, but if you’re not yet privy to F&B’s delights, check out their mostly filter-free Instagram feed for food at its freshest. YUM.
8. Natural Born Feeder
As one of Ireland’s most famous models — and former Miss Universe Ireland — it came as somewhat of a surprise when in 2013 Rozanna Purcell branched into food blogging. However, three years and one book — Natural Born Feeder — later and Purcell has well and truly put the doubters in their place. Follow her blog and on Instagram for healthy whole food recipes.
9. Meet Me In The Morning
A new addition to the Dublin café/brunch-scene, Meet Me In The Morning just off off Camden Street in the south inner city opened its doors in April and has already gained the approval of those in the know. Follow Brian O’Keefe and Fiona Hallinan, the brains behind the operation, on Instagram and you’ll soon see why it’s the new place where all the cool kids hang out.
10. French Foodie in Dublin
The clue is in the name with this one. Follow France-native Ketty Elisabeth — who runs Delicious Dublin Tours, is a graduate of Ballymaloe Cookery School and has won numerous awards for her blog — and discover some of Dublin’s best kept food secrets.
11. Super Miss Sue
This Dublin seafood restaurant — which offers a range of options from chip shop to fine dining in Luna — was recently crowned the ‘Best Restaurant in Ireland’ at the 2016 RAI Irish Restaurant Awards, so you know it’s good. However, be warned, SMS’s Instagram feed is not for you if you’re hungry … drool.
12. My Fussy Eater
Parents looking for inspiration on what to feed their children — particularly fussy eaters — should follow and bookmark Ciara Attwell @My Fussy Eater. Attwell’s healthy and easy to follow solutions should have your kids eating their five-a-day in no time.
13. JR Ryall
Cork-based — Ballymaloe to be exact — pastry chef JR Ryall’s feed is a feast for the senses, particularly if you like symmetry, and who doesn’t really? Rows of freshly baked meringues, topped with cream and strawberries or homemade raspberry and custard donuts, this is dessert decadence.
14. The Little Green Spoon
Indy Power first started blogging about food while studying for a business degree from Trinity College Dublin, and now the 23-year-old fully-fledged food writer has 43k followers on Instagram and a cookbook due out this September. Most of Power’s recipes are nutrient-rich, gluten free and low in sugar, with many suitable for paleo, dairy free and vegan diets, plus they look amazing.
15. Wildflour Bakery
Finally for dessert, we have Wildflour Bakery, based in Stoneybatter, Dublin. Indulge your sweet tooth with Kate Packwood’s amazing baked creations and prepare for a chocolate coma … in your head at least.
