This Sunday night, movie buffs worldwide will be glued to their TV and computer screens to see if Leo can finally nab that Best Actor Oscar, and end the meme fodder, at the 88th Academy Awards in LA.

Strangely, our tickets to the star-studded event have gotten lost in the post … so instead we’ll have to make do with Twitter updates from the event while we catch up on some of the nominated movies we missed in the cinema.

With this in mind, we’ve compiled a list of movie apps nominees that have given ‘Oscar-worthy performances’ over the last 12 months.

Best all-rounder … Netflix

The shoe-in for the main prize is of course Netflix. With over 75+ million members in over 190 countries and thousands of hours of TV and movies, Netflix is both the Meryl Streep and the one to beat this year on our list, and it’s unlikely to be beaten; particularly now that the world’s largest internet TV network has started to produce its own original movie content, alongside it’s successful original TV shows. Avail of a one-month free trial and €9.99 per month thereafter.

Best of British … All 4

The app/service formally known as 4oD, All 4 is as British as Dame Judi Dench and has been around for a lot longer than many other similar services; plus unlike the BBC Player it’s available in Ireland.

Hugely popular for its wide array of TV shows and movies, watch Channel 4, Film 4 — which, coincidentally is partially behind Oscar-nominated movies Carol, Room, Amy and 45 Years — E4 and More 4 live or catch up on your favourites TV shows or shorts on demand.

Best for blockbusters … Sky Store

If you really are desperate to catch up on the latest cinema releases but can’t make it to your local picture house, Sky Store is for you. Unlike Sky Go, you do not have to be a Sky customer to download and use Sky Store but you do need to be willing to pay about €5 to rent a new release or €15 to buy it. Luckily, if you do decide to buy, you’ll receive the digital file that you can play on any device and you’ll also receive a DVD direct to your door … handy.

Best for indie movies … MUBI

The indie yin to Sky’s blockbuster yang, MUBI serves up cult arthouse movies, award-winning documentaries, classics and foreign language films from around the world. As with most of the other apps on this list, you can stream through the MUBI app or download to watch later, it also supports Chromecast if you want to watch on a larger screen. The best news? It’s just €5.99 a month and you get one month free when you sign up.

Best for research … IMDb

It happens to the best of us. You’re watching a movie at home when you spot a familiar face; is it the guy from that thing you saw 10 years ago? Or maybe you love watching featurettes and interviews with movie stars; or, like us, you’re a trailer junkie. Whatever you’re into the IMDb app has you covered. You can even find out who you share a birthday with.

Don’t worry Leo, you’ve got this; 2016 is your year.
