So you’ve updated your iPhone to iOS 9.3 — which was released earlier this week — and read our blog about some of the new updates in this version of iOS, one of which is the innovative inclusion of Night Shift. But what exactly is ‘Night Shift’ and how do you enable it on your phone? Let’s find out.

Want to get a better night’s sleep? Of course you do! Then the first step is to make use of Night Shift on your iPhone or iPad.

Studies have shown that the unnatural blue light emitted from your smartphone — particularly at night — could be disrupting your sleep cycle and causing your brain to stop producing melatonin. Night Shift uses your iOS device’s clock and geolocation to determine when it’s sunset in your location, then it automatically shifts the colours in your display to the warmer end of the spectrum to make it easier on your eyes. In the morning, your display will return to its regular settings.

Sounds good right? Luckily, it’s extremely easy to enable on your phone if it’s an iPhone 5s or later.

Simply swipe your finger up from the bottom of your phone’s locked screen and press the sun-like symbol — it’s the middle symbol in the bottom row — this will automatically turn Night Shift on until you press this symbol again to turn it off.

If you’d prefer to schedule Night Shift to come on automatically, simple go to Settings > Display > Night Shift. Here, if you select the ‘from — to’ section, you can schedule Night Shift to come on to your own ‘Custom Schedule’ or ‘Sunset to Sunrise’ based on your location. You can also decide how warm or cool you want the screen to be. Sweet dreams!
