Often times there’s an idea that occurs and kicks off the creative / strategic process for anyone working within the product development world.

In the world of design, there is a constant pressure to deliver perfect user experiences. Product designers(ux) are often held to high standards, expected to create flawless products that meet every user’s needs. However, this is an impossible goal to achieve without well-defined and clear product direction. This is where product & design teams work closely!

Product management is responsible for defining the overall strategy and vision for a product, as well as ensuring that it meets business objectives. This includes conducting market research, defining product requirements, and prioritizing features. On the other hand, Product Design design focuses on understanding user needs and creating interfaces that are intuitive, efficient, and enjoyable to use.

Who give’s product direction?

  • Product Management typically provides the direction of their designated product space based on the business needs and priority.

What is product direction?

  • Product direction includes the scope of work, the problem to solve, and incremental planning for how the product will get from V1 to V2 and beyond. The ideal user experience!

Why do we need product direction?

  • It sets the overall vision & goals for a product or feature being released. This is a team effort with Product & Design teams to ensure business & user needs are met strategically.

One of the key areas where product management and product design intersect is in the product requirements. The product manager is responsible for defining the high-level requirements of the product, while the product designer(UX) is responsible for translating those requirements into specific features and interactions that meet the user’s needs. By collaborating on the product requirements, the product manager and product designer(UX) can ensure that the product meets both business objectives and user needs.

Conducting Meetings

  • One-on-One Deep Dive: This is the time to discuss all aspects of the project and capture it so, that as a designer it’s clear how to proceed.
  • Here’s an example of how this works within the Carputty ecosystem as of today.

Conducting User Research

Either Product Design(UX) or Product can conduct user research to gain insights into the users’ needs, preferences, and pain points. This research can provide valuable information to the product manager about what features and functionality the product should include. In the best case, this is a shared responsibility depending on the project.

At Carputty, a significant amount of research and the framework for is handled by the amazing Haley Dabbs.

Reviewing existing documentation

The product designer(UX) can review existing documentation such as user stories, use cases, one-pagers, and product specifications to gain a better understanding of the product requirements.

Both need each other to ensure the ideal experience is created.

Product management is responsible for defining the overall strategy and vision for a product, as well as ensuring that it meets business objectives. This includes conducting market research, defining product requirements, and prioritizing features. On the other hand, product design focuses on understanding user needs and creating interfaces that are intuitive, efficient, and enjoyable to use.

The intersection of these two disciplines is where the product vision meets the user’s needs. Product managers and Product designers(ux) work together to ensure that the product’s features and functionality align with the user’s goals and expectations. This collaboration can lead to better product designs, as the user’s perspective is taken into account throughout the product development process.

Another area where product management and product design(ux) intersect is in the product roadmap. The product roadmap outlines the features and functionality that will be added to the product over time. By collaborating on the product roadmap, the product manager and product designer(ux) can ensure that the product evolves in a way that meets the user’s needs and aligns with the overall product vision.

The product manager and product designer(ux) also collaborate on user research. Product manager and product designers work together to define the research goals, create research plans, and analyze research findings. By collaborating on user research, they can ensure that the product meets the user’s needs and is designed to address their pain points.

User research is the process of understanding the user’s needs, goals, and pain points.

Finally, product management and product design(ux) intersect in the product testing phase. Product testing is the process of testing the product with real users to identify usability issues and areas for improvement. Product managers and product designers work together to define the testing goals, create testing plans, and analyze testing findings. By collaborating on product testing, they can identify and address usability issues before the product is released to the market.

In conclusion, the intersection of product management and product design(ux) is critical to the success of a product. By collaborating on product requirements, the product roadmap, user research, and product testing, the product manager and product designer(ux) can ensure that the product meets the user’s needs and aligns with the overall product vision.

This collaboration leads to better products that meet both business objectives and user needs.
