“Everybody should learn to program a computer, because it teaches you how to think.” - Steve Jobs

You would have heard thousands of similar motivating quotes that charge you up with energy and you say YES here I come … but then the big question is where do you start from? Technology has no boundaries — there are so many aspects to it: architecture, database, coding, testing …and the list goes on. How can one know which to pick up? What would you like more — the testing, the development, or the designing part? Moreover, the daily grind can chip away your goals and visions — and the enthusiasm to become superman/superwoman @ IT is diluted!

planning project — front end & backend

If you are still motivated, here is the spoiler :

70% of a person’s learning is experience-based, 20% comes from interacting with fellow pupils and 10% is the result of formal reading” — Morgan McCall, Robert Eichinger and Michael Lombardo (70–20–10 rule)

So, you need to find a project to work on; and then identify all the parts needed to make this project work - its design, its look and feel, its deployments etc; along with deciding on what software, hardware and/or techniques to be used to create these parts. Everything has to be done alone; and all frustrations every time something does not work have to be dealt with — on your own. This is enough for anyone to give up on the hunt for technology excellence. I belonged to exactly this category, and would have remained in it if it was not for carsales!

The meeting on 15th of October 2019 changed all that — when carsales created an opportunity for any and every woman in the company to try her hands with any aspect of technology and ‘Women in Tech (WIT)’ group was born. WIT was tasked to create a website for carsales foundation. It gave all that was needed — a project, the leadership, resources, expertise and even office time…. what more could I have asked for! With the encouragement, and the direction and an awesome lot of teammates — learning & building the website together started — the auctions site was created…

I am indebted from the bottom of the heart (and I can say each of my teammates feels the same way) — thank you carsales — Jason Blackman, Jane Ooi, Chantelle Spiller and Anthea Corridon — for this amazing chance. We have experimented and learnt so much. An equal thanks to all team leads of our tribes who never complained about the amount of time we spent with this project. In fact they quietly reduced the work load so that we could achieve what we had wanted. I had help from every member of my tribe — there is no man or woman here, we are just friends. This is what makes carsales — the CARSALES — so very special place to work for
