Our Women In Tech (WIT) group is made up of women working across a number of different functions in our Product and Technology team. We have DevOps Engineers, Software Developers, QA Engineers, Data Engineers, Product Managers and Program Managers just to name a few. They come from all different levels, from graduates to members of our technology senior leadership group. One thing that brings the group together is not only a passion for technology and learning but the shared goal to improve female participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

In recent years the program has focused on this goal and the group has been active in sharing their knowledge and passion for technology with younger generations. We have successfully run a number of coding classes in a local girls high school, run an interactive workshop day at Super Daughter Day, hosted internal coding classes for employees’ children and spent countless hours hosting work experience students and going to high school and university career fairs, just to name a few.

In addition to the work we have been doing in raising STEM careers awareness in the community, we also decided to add another layer to the WIT program which looks at personal and professional development. As a group we decided to have a quarterly focus and run learning workshops and activities promoted around this. Our current focus is AWS and we have been meeting every two weeks to discuss a new topic, deep dive into a problem, hear from internal experts and have robust discussion all in the name of learning. We’re hoping by the end of this quarter we will have a number of the group ready to complete certification.

The program has been a great opportunity for us all to get together, network, learn and share. It also speaks to the commitment of carsales to diversity in the workplace. We recognise that there are long strides to be made in improving entry rates into STEM and that this doesn’t just rest with carsales. However, our internal engagement and momentum with this program is strong and we are committed to fostering team ideas about how we can further our efforts.

We’re hoping by having a program that focuses on personal and professional development as well reaching out to the community we can continue to be strong advocates for female participation in STEM.
