Ahh, Thailand. White beaches, giant elephants and an intricate culture. Anyone who’s been far east knows that you can never get enough of Thailand, no matter how long you’re there for. Here are a few facts you probably didn’t know about Thailand.

1. Thailand is home to the Kitti’s hog-nosed bat, which is the world’s smallest mammal. It is between 2–3 centimeters long, weighs only 2 grams and is found in the western part of the country.

2. Each year, in Lopburi, the Monkey Buffet Festival is held. The local population of 2,000 monkeys literally gorge themselves on all kinds fruits and vegetables that are put out for them by the locals.

3. Leaving your house without first putting on underwear is illegal and you can actually be arrested for it!

4. Bangkok has the longest city name in the world; written out it’s actually: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Phiman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.

5. It’s very important when in Thailand to ensure your feet are always lower than another person’s head — otherwise you will offend them. Also try your hardest to avoid pointing your feet at a Buddha statue or another person — it’s a cultural faux pas.
