As avid vacationers and travellers, we’re always searching for ways to save money on our next adventure. Whether it’s cheaper flights or staying in a hostel, nothing saves more than home swapping. I got in touch with a couple seasoned swappers to debunk a few “home swapping myths” and hear just how worthy this incredible opportunity is.

Where did your first home swap take place?

“The first swaps we did were with a family from Jerusalem.” Clara, Israel

“We did our first swap about 8 years ago when we traded our Soho New York City Apartment for an apartment in Tel Aviv. We found the place through friends of friends.” Michelle, NY

What were your initial fears or assumptions?

“We were a bit nervous and didn’t really understand how it would work. For example, if they’ll use our private possessions, what will our house look like when we return, what if something is ruined or what if we show their house is much worse.” Clara, Israel

What do you go over before agreeing to swap?

“So, I talked to the mom of the other family and we found out that we were both on the same page. We talked about how we’re going to prepare each house for one another and how we should find it when we return. We agreed on what we can use freely in the houses and anything that we didn’t want to be used, we simply put a note saying ‘Please do not touch’. Also our neighbors have a key and they met the family when they arrived. Ultimately, if you feel comfortable after a few conversations with the people, then in the end it feels like you’re swapping with friends.” Clara, Israel

Did you find your place in good condition when you returned?

“We always ask questions and kept in touch with the other family during a swap so we don’t have to worry about our house when we come back.” Clara, Israel

“Our place was in good shape except for something sticky and hard to remove on one of the carpets and one of my glasses was broken. But they were very respectful of my home” Michelle, NY

How much do you save on traveling expenses by home swapping?

“We have saved 1000s of dollars swapping since you spend nothing on hotel.” -Michelle, NY

“In house swapping, especially with children, you gain so many benefits beyond the financial savings. Unlike other options, a house is fully equipped, has separate rooms so you’re never all cramped in a hotel room and is usually located in a non-touristy neighborhood.” Clara, Israel

What tips do you have for first-time home swappers?

“First timers? Make sure to use a reputable site, lock up your most precious valuables or give them to someone to hold for you and embrace [home swapping] with open arms, especially when you are traveling to a different culture.” Michelle, NY

“In the end, it’s all about being open-minded, letting go of your fears and enjoying the whole experience. There are so many reasons why we choose to home swap for all of our vacations and we think it can work for everyone else too.” Clara, Israel
