Introducing the Castlight Engineering Blog
Welcome to the Castlight Engineering blog! I’m very excited that the awesome engineers and data scientists at Castlight Health will have this opportunity to tell you about the great work they do. We work on hard, meaningful problems in the healthcare technology world that impact all of us and we’re using cutting edge technology to solve these problems.
Castlight’s customers are mostly large employers, but our primary users are their employees and their families. We provide those users with mobile and web apps for care guidance and wellbeing, supporting them wherever they are in their health journey. Our application also serves as a convenient, centralized location for them to learn about and engage with their employer-sponsored benefits.
The care guidance functionality helps users make better healthcare decisions by choosing higher quality and lower cost medical, behavioral health, dental, and prescription drug options. The wellbeing functionality directly connects them with relevant benefit programs related to fitness, nutrition, sleep, mental resilience, pregnancy, financial management, and many more categories. We track their engagement with these programs and facilitate rewarding them with a wide range of incentives for their participation. Our application also allows users to join their co-workers in fun, engaging challenges that help keep them active and fit.
Castlight has huge, diverse sets of health and user engagement data that we use to deeply personalize the user experience so that people can get the health information most important to them as quickly and easily as possible. Our data scientists use machine learning algorithms and expert systems to accurately predict prices for medical, behavioral health, and dental services from in-network providers, as well as for prescription drugs. We also use deep learning and traditional machine learning algorithms to make personalized recommendations for the best healthcare providers and benefit programs for our users.
Curating valuable information like this will have a big impact only if you can make it available in an engaging, responsive, easy to use application. That’s why we’ve also invested heavily in building modern Angular mobile and web applications on top of highly scalable and reliable Java microservices. The Net Promoter Scores (NPS) for our mobile and web apps rival top consumer applications and are far above traditional healthcare applications.
