As December reaches an end, don’t miss your Christmas load of Data News! 🎄

In this issue, you’ll find:

  • One data tool that we believe is worth digging into as a data person. We will also provide where it fits in the data ecosystem.
  • A selection of the most delightful articles we read this month along with a quick teaser.
  • The data person you should follow right now if you don’t already because he/she writes interesting content.
  • Three curated jobs we would run to (if we were not having so much fun building Castor)

Data Tool

Husprey raised a €3 million seed round to replace dashboards with data notebooks. Husprey is an SQL notebook designed specifically for modern data teams. Its goal is to enable data professionals to conduct thorough and shareable data analysis, addressing the limitations that many data teams face when using BI tools primarily intended for business users. Husprey aims to provide a tool that allows data teams to perform more advanced analyses that can be easily shared with their colleagues. We have recently added Husprey to our list of SQL editors, as it is a third-generation notebook that caters specifically to the needs of technical teams.

Data News

  • Data Catalog as a plug-in: a practical approach. When it comes to data lineage, Thibault Latrace suggests that it may be more beneficial for organizations to use an external data lineage solution rather than building their own in-house system. There are a lot of existing tools for data lineage in the market, so there is no need to create a new one from scratch.
  • 3 Trends That Will Shape the Data ecosystem in 2023. According to Tristan Mayer, CEO of Castor, the data landscape in 2023 will be characterized by increased data democratization, a surge in data volumes, and widespread adoption of data cataloging tools. Data catalogs are expected to become more prevalent as they make it easier for a wider range of stakeholders to make sense of large data volumes.
  • The Rise of the Semantic Layer: Metrics On-The-Fly. The semantic layer is a crucial aspect of data management, but it can be a confusing concept for many people. Simon Späti from Airbyte has written an in-depth explanation of the semantic layer, covering everything you need to know about this important aspect of data management. This includes how the semantic layer works, its role in data integration and analysis, and best practices for designing and implementing a semantic layer. Whether you are a data professional or simply want to better understand how data is used and managed within your organization, this explanation of the semantic layer is a valuable resource.

Data Person

This month, we are excited to highlight Ole Olessen-Bagneux as our favorite data expert. He is a prominent figure in the field of data cataloging and governance and has participated in many important discussions on these topics. We are looking forward to the release of his upcoming book, “The Enterprise Data Catalog,” which is set to be published in early 2023.
