Hi there,

June has been a busy month at CastorDoc. In case you haven’t noticed yet, we said bye to our purple beaver and fully rebranded. We also had a company offsite. The whole CastorDoc team gathered in the south of France for three days of team building and reuniting around the vision. Time to rest? Not really. Snowflake Summit is starting next week and we’re more than ready for it. If you want to meet the team there, we’re organizing a large dinner with our data friends. Make sure to join us. Despite all the excitement, we still make time to write Data News! So, let’s get back to it. In this edition, you’ll find:

  • One data tool that we believe is worth digging into as a data person. We will also provide where it fits in the data ecosystem.
  • A selection of the most delightful articles we read this month along with a quick teaser.
  • Show and Tell: Three great pieces of news from the CastorDoc team.
  • A data meme to make you smile.

Data Tool

There’s a fresh face in the data observability arena! Telmai, a data observability platform tailored for hybrid data environments, has secured a cool $5.5 million in seed funding. What sets Telmai apart from the rest? Today, a lot of businesses run on a hybrid data architecture, using a combination of legacy and modern data systems spread across structured, semi-structured, and event-streaming data sources, delta lakes, and cloud data warehouses. Telmai provides a scalable platform that can detect issues across this diverse data. Curious about where Telmai stands in our data observability benchmark? Take a peek right below.

You can find a full benchmark of observability tools here.

Data News

  • Data documentation best practices. Marie Lefevre strikes again with a stellar piece on documentation — a subject that you know is dear to our hearts. Marie breaks down the nitty-gritty of constructing a solid framework for your documentation. The real gem in this piece? The emphasis on tailoring documentation with a specific audience in mind. Before writing documentation, ask yourself the following questions: Who is my audience? What is their technical background? What do they expect from data documentation? Marie differentiates between three different kind of audiences: data team, business users, and other stakeholders. An absolute must-read for the data documentation aficionados out there!
  • Are You a Data Ticket taker or Transition Maker? The article emphasizes the importance for data teams to transition from being reactive to becoming proactive contributors within organizations. Reactive data teams mainly respond to demands and are often considered cost centers. Proactive teams, on the other hand, generate value by leading the organization in using data to achieve its objectives. In this piece, Barr Moses proposes four steps you can take to make the transition from being a ticket taker to become a transition maker.
  • Why data consumers do not trust your reporting Great article from the data drift blog. There are a handful of reasons that might make data consumers skeptical about your reports. Number one: when there’s a shuffle in the code, it might be due to a metric change or a “bugfix” tinkering with a metric. And if the code isn’t the culprit, then the raw data updates could be. But how do data teams solve this metric drift problem? You’ll have to read the full piece to know.

Show & Tell

  • In June, our CEO, Tristan Mayer, wrote a piece about the next Chapter for castorDoc. We fully rebranded and refined our vision: we believe data should empower everyone in the organization to make better decisions. We plan to make this vision a reality through 5 key pillars: a user-friendly interface, AI-powered insights, collective intelligence, accessible documentation, and innovative metrics exploration. This is a very important piece if you wish to understand where CastorDoc is headed.
  • Castor AI 2.0 is the feature of the month. Two months ago, we released Castor AI query explainer. Today, we’re excited to take it a step further with a powerful new feature: AI-powered documentation. You can now use AI to write descriptions for columns, tables and dashboards along with drafting knowledge pages for you. Castor AI is now not just your tool but your ally, turbocharging and automating your documentation efforts. Get in touch if you want to check it out.
  • Snowflake summit is just a week away, and we are organizing a dinner with our friends at Census, Airbyte and LaunchDarkly. If you are coming to the summit, you should sign up for sure. Here is where you can do it.
