The night of San Juan is one of the most celebrated festivities in all Catalonia, Spain and even in some other parts of Europe. Obviously, Barcelona could not miss the opportunity celebrate this great holiday.

Plans for the night of San Juan in Barcelona

For many people, the night of San Juan is one of the most special and magical nights, because there are always many events to enjoy, parties and dinners between friends or relatives, bonfires, firecrackers, pyrotechnics and music. Dance and entertainment are the main protagonists of this night.

If you don’t like firecrackers, we strictly recommend you to leave the city and go to a remote mountain refuge or get an easy five stars hotel in Paseo de Gracia, no noise and good rest. During the day of San Juan the beach and all Barcelona city will be just noise of firecrackers and shouts of fun and music. So it is highly recommended if we visit the city on those dates to stay in a charming hotel where we can rest.

Since the first hour of the morning, and even during the previous week, both kids and adults will take the streets of Barcelona to start having fun, making noise, heating the atmosphere with gunpowder and sounds to celebrate the festivity of the fire in all the high. Are you in?

The flame of the Canigó arrives at the Plaza Sant Jaume of Barcelona on the 23rd in the afternoon. What do we mean when we say it arrives at the square? The fire of the ‘Flama del Canigó’ is the one that ignites the different bonfires of San Juan, and in addition, it never goes out. During the rest of the year it is stored in the “Castillo de Perpignan” until June 22nd when it is taken to the Canigó mountain in the Pyrenees. At midnight, the Flame is distributed among different people and is expanding and unfolding to ignite the fires of San Juan of hundreds of populations.

The flame is received by all popular authorities and symbols, such as the city’s Eagle and the giants. These are popular characters who dance to the rhythm of the song “Muntanyes del Canigó” in the Plaza Sant Jaume. After this dance, every neighborhood collects the fire that will ignite the bonfires of the whole city. After that, the fire party begins!

Once the bonfires are lit, it’s time to start the party. “Verbenas” in the squares and parties on the streets of the different neighborhoods of Barcelona. Enjoy the night of San Juan in Barcelona as the locals joining the different verbenas where everything is music, fun and pyrotechnics.
