Scaling Diverse and Innovative Energy Solutions

We live in a time of incredible abundance of energy resources and technologies. Decades of energy innovation has brought historic quality of life and economic vitality for many, but still remains out of reach for others. We are in a profound moment of opportunity for energy systems and the communities they serve. I see the potential to shape this evolution in ways that ensure resilience, sustainability, affordability, and access.

History reminds us of the complexities involved in transforming our energy systems at this colossal scale and unprecedented pace. Unlike previous transitions which centered on shifts from one fuel source to another, the transitions underway now will transform how we produce, distribute, store, use, and account for energy broadly. I am looking forward to examining these transitions at the upcoming International Gas Research Conference 2024 this week in Banff, Alberta.

The IEA’s 2023 Net Zero Emissions Roadmap highlights the success achieved by the rapid pace of technological progress in solar PV and batteries. It also reinforces that we need more investment in low-carbon molecules, repurposed infrastructure networks, low-emission fuels, carbon management and carbon-to-value, and many other critical innovations in gases, liquids, and infrastructure. Fortunately, the focus on low-carbon molecules and industrial decarbonization has been heating up as highlighted by Sightline Climate’s 2023 Climate Tech Investment Trends.

Collaborative Innovation Platforms — Key to Advancing Low Carbon Energy Solutions

At GTI Energy, we understand that collaboration is key to scaled success. Our collaborations and partnerships have been tackling consequential challenges alongside energy system operators to continually demonstrate and scale next generation applied-sciences, technologies, processes, and services for eight decades. Core to this success is building platforms for collaboration that de-risk and progress solutions to proven scale and deployment.

Let’s look at the standout low-carbon molecule of the year: hydrogen. We have been working to address gaps and integrate solutions across the hydrogen economy to help realize its potential as a versatile low-carbon energy carrier. We have taken a role in three regional clean hydrogen hubs (Including leadership for HyVelocity, the Gulf Coast hub), launched new collaborative platforms like SustainH2 (hydrogen underground storage), HyRes (hydrogen emissions), and the Open Hydrogen Initiative (hydrogen emissions accounting) to work through critical challenges by advancing science and demonstrating solutions.

These hydrogen partnerships are representative of the work we do each day in our systems approach to solving the consequential challenges required to unlock the potential of low-carbon and net-negative-carbon molecules. For other low-carbon molecules, we are leading efforts to improve methane emissions measurement methodology (Veritas), mapping practical opportunities for transitioning natural gas infrastructure (NZIP), progressing green methanol as a lower-carbon marine fuel (SunGas Renewables), advancing carbon capture and geologic storage through CarbonSAFE projects (Projeo), developing low-carbon technologies in cement and steel, and charting the path for community geothermal heating and cooling systems.

Through these initiatives, we are harnessing the power of collaborative innovation to accelerate low-carbon molecules and achieve impact at-the scale and timeframe required.

Introducing Rev Innovations

Rev Innovations (Rev), GTI’s new affiliated innovation firm, seeks to invest in low-carbon solutions for energy and industrial decarbonization, including the gases, liquids, and infrastructure sectors. Rev aims to support innovative startups and companies not only to scale new technologies, but also to move solutions to market through services and assets. Rev seeks to invest in our partners, colleagues, and communities by supporting solutions that increase resource efficiency, provide environmental services, scale low-carbon molecules and products, and enable transition of existing infrastructure.

Please follow Rev’s progress, and learn more by joining me and Johanna Schmidtke, Managing Partner for Rev Innovations, for a GTI Energy Future Focused discussion called “Rev Innovations — Collaboration to Enable Scale” on June 11.
