What is a Database ?

A database is an organized collection of structured information , or data , typically stored electronically in a computer system. A database is usually controlled by a database management system (DBMS).

Types of Databases..

Hierarchical databases

A hierarchical database is a data model in which data is stored in the form of records and organized into a tree-like structure, or parent-child structure, in which one parent node can have many child nodes connected through links.

Network database

A database organized according to ownership of records, allowing records to have multiple owners and thus providing multiple access paths to the data.

Object-oriented databases

An object-oriented database (OOD) is a database system that can work with complex data objects — that is, objects that mirror those used in object-oriented programming languages. In object-oriented programming, everything is an object, and many objects are quite complex, having different properties and methods.

Relational databases

A relational database is a type of database that stores and provides access to data points that are related to one another. Relational database are based on the relational model, an intuitive, straightforward way of representing data in tables. In a relational database, each row in the table is a record with a unique ID called the key.

NoSQL databases

NoSQL databases (aka “not only SQL”) are non-tabular databases and store data differently than relational tables. NoSQL databases come in a variety of types based on their data model. The main types are document, key-value, wide-column, and graph. They provide flexible schemas and scale easily with large amounts of data and high user loads.

PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL is a powerful, open source object-relational database system that uses and extends the SQL language combined with many features that safely store and scale the most complicated data workloads. The origins of PostgreSQL date back to 1986 as part of the POSTGRES project at the University of California at Berkeley and has more than 30 years of active development on the core platform.

MongoDB is an open-source document-oriented database that is designed to store a large scale of data and also allows you to work with that data very efficiently. It is categorized under the NoSQL (Not only SQL) database because the storage and retrieval of data in the MongoDB are not in the form of tables.
