Then there was the time I nearly got stuck in the oven. I was working as at a local grocery store and we had a super tiny space which was a combination of a deli and bakery. Our baking oven wasn’t much larger than me, a five foot, five-inch fat person. I’m rather spherical in shape and was the resident baker.

The oven consisted of rotating racks which you would put sheet pans into for making many cookies or breads at once. It wasn’t exactly state-of-the-art equipment but it got the job done. Everything was pretty old but still in working condition, so we made do. That said, the old oven was so old that it had no failsafe — as in, it was possible to shut yourself inside the oven if you didn’t watch the door swinging.

That said, I was extra cautious when moving pans in and out, keeping a foot kicked out to grab the oven door when it pulled to. Except for that one time when I fumbled a hot pan and nearly dropped it. I had to pull my door foot in and here comes the oven quickly closing in around me. Except I’m fat! And the door bounced off my hip, saving me from a fate I didn’t want to consider, as everyone else had yet to arrive for the day.

Was being fat a superpower that day? Unsure but was glad for the extra girth.
