Hope Has Many Faces
Free Verse
hope has many faces,
a feeling abstract and subtle,
determined yet enigmatic:
hope is us, our presence
despite the world’s arduousness;
hope is an uncalled river in eyes when in contemplation,
hope is tomes of religious texts,
their sacredness and revelations divine;
hope is all the tints in all quills of all birds,
unfolding roots of a tree,
distinct white pebbles on brown sand,
an open pathway, a clearing blemish,
a sense of tomorrow, the unread
pages of books;
hope is droplets of perseverance in lackluster grit,
undaunted belief in unseen mercies,
one pearl in a rubble of many failures;
hope is a sum of the many extant invocations
held by sighing and open palms,
its scripts habituated by spry fingers
in dusk/in dawn, no matter when, and
in helplessness/in gratefulness;
hope is much subterranean than
a simple sureness on surface,
a mote of light within a moment of misery,
a fulfilling meal appearing from nowhere
for a hungry household,
a father’s confidence without a penny,
a simulacrum of invisible faith and grace,
anything gone and forgotten that returns
to whoever and wherever it was,
an asylum to the unwanted, a guiding atlas;
hope is attaining positivity from somebody’s words,
that shattered silence when cornered,
long wait without conditions and with devotions,
the sense of patience…
