The kingdom existed throughout time in a deep, wide valley, shaped in a bowl with cliffs all around. There and only there did its people live out their lives. None had ever ventured out — or so the historical records would say — for no one believed there existed anything outside this valley.

For you see, this kingdom was covered in a thick black cloud, where hardly any light could penetrate. And nothing above this cloud could be seen.

Always, it was dark, though at times, it would vary in its darkness. The kingdom was a sad kingdom. And there existed not one citizen who lived in joy; though many claimed they did.

It was very difficult — nay, impossible — to be happy when one carried a basket of logs upon one’s back. Day in and day out.

And this is exactly what the people of the valley did.

They were devout people, and their faith in their gods was very strong. And their greatest god was the god of grievances.

What a demanding god this god had become, for always he demanded sacrifice. Across the kingdom temples for this god of grievance were erected. And within each temple the sacrificial fire burned.

There were no great mysteries, nor sacred texts to be learned by its followers…
