I AM POETRY CHALLENGE
When I am gone
…where grief and love abide
When I am gone
and you wake from a dreamless sleep
in the muted grey of dawn
heat your tea
let milk spill from the silver pitcher
burdened with my fingerprints
caress the cup against the chill
raise it gently to your lips
I am the warmth
where we once belonged
Walk to the hollow
while the first rays of light
seep over the pines
the horizon a sweeping pastel
of pink and purple
lift your eyes from the path
I am the fog
settled in the treetops
Splash through brackish puddles
beneath bare branches waiting for spring
to the circle of birch
guarding the rocky creek bed
sit upon a rounded stone
worn by eons of raging water
slowed to this winter stream
I am a whisper
in this silence of our geography
Until the Flicker announces
hammering against a tree
the beating of my heart
I am the echo across the wood
break free, my love.
A poem for where I am, we are, most human…in our love and grief.
