When I was dating, I came across two kinds of people: those who felt an immediate spark and wanted to move at warp speed, and those who seemed like great future partners but backed out at the last minute due to x, y, z reasons.

Then there was one who fell right in the middle. We met, and he decided it was something worth pursuing. By the third date, he was already discussing moving into my area and looking for houses to rent.

He was moving at light speed, but I am guessing he had his reasons. He had a high-pressure job in the city and joint custody of two young kids. Perhaps he wanted someone in his life to bring some stability to an otherwise chaotic existence.

Barely a month into dating, he called me one day to tell me his ex-wife had gone off her meds and experienced a psychotic break. He sounded overwhelmed trying to manage everything with her in the hospital.

Although he assured me he was still serious about me, he never called me after that.

I have since moved on; however, I still wonder what happened to him. But I will never know because that bridge was burned when he vanished without a trace.
