Carlo Acutis: a Shining Light for Modernity

The Catholic community has been buzzing over the last several days about the beatification of Carlo Acutis… and with good reason. Carlo, who lived from 1991 to 2006, is now officially the first millennial to be beatified. When reading about his life, it is hard not to feel a connection to this computer-loving, selfless individual and desire to learn from his example.

The now Blessed Carlo Acutis only lived to be 15 years old. However, from a young age it was apparent to everyone that Carlo lived for Jesus. Throughout his boyhood, Acutis became a daily communicant, spent countless hours in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and let this time guide his life. He would often invite others to share in this experience of the Eucharist with him as well. This included his parents, who had a reversion of faith due to Carlo’s fervor. He had an impact at school too. Though he was often thought of as a fun loving, soccer playing, computer guy, he was also known for defending the bullied and outcast students. At age 11, Blessed Carlo Acutis started tracking Eucharistic miracles and eventually programmed a website to help him broadcast this information to the world. It was only a few short years later that Carlo was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away. Despite his early death, Carlo lived every day for Jesus. Remarkable things did not stop happening surrounding Carlo upon his death. In 2013, a healing miracle was attributed to his intercession. This Monday, the Italian then went through the penultimate step on the path to being formally recognized as a Saint in front of a crowd of 3000 in Assisi.

What can we take from Carlo’s example? Perhaps, the most striking thing is that we really can become Saints in today’s world (yes, I know he hasn’t been canonized yet, but still!). We are talking about someone born in the 90s not the 900s. Acutis actually used a computer and video games to bring people to Jesus. Not only did he show us it was possible to become a Saint in modern times, but he also showed it is possible to live a saintly life as a young person. Carlo did not spend years and years becoming a theological expert, nor was he born into any extraordinary circumstances. He is no different than us! He simply had an unbreakable love for Jesus Christ, and strived to help the faith of others with the time that he had. It is easy to forget sometimes that we are all called to sainthood. Carlo seemed to be striving toward this goal every moment of his life. In the hope that we may do the same, Blessed Carlo Acutis pray for us!

“To be always united with Jesus, this is my life program” — Blessed Carlo Acutis, age 7
