Saigon fell on the last day of April 1975. Nearly 50 years later, we still remember the video of U.S. helicopters rescuing refugees from rooftops.

A new documentary — the second highest-grossing documentary of 2024 — shows the hero we didn’t see on TV. The heroic former archbishop of Saigon was rounded up and imprisoned by the communists.

When Venerable Cardinal Francis-Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan was arrested in 1975, he had one question: “Will I be able to celebrate the Eucharist?”

Jesus Thirsts: The Miracle of the Eucharist returns to theaters June 18–19 after beating all rivals for “per screen average” sales and scoring 98 percent approval on Rotten Tomatoes.

The new film shows how the imprisoned cardinal ached to do what every priest does daily: Turn bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ.

His captors allowed him to write his family, asking for “necessities,” so he asked for clothes and toiletries and added, “Please send me a little wine as medicine for my stomachache.”
