A baby cried out on Pentecost morning, and Father Miguel decided to tell me about it.

The cry came at our 7:45 a.m. Mass. That first Mass is smaller, older, and quieter than the 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Masses, which are packed wall to wall with young families and lots of loud babies.

Father Miguel’s first thought when he heard the baby’s cry at such an early hour was, “Maybe it’s a manifestation,” but then he thought, “Or maybe it’s just a baby.” Then he laughed.

He is a very holy, joyful young priest (we are both 2023 graduates of the Encounter School of Ministry), so he should trust his first instinct.

Encounter: The difference between manifestations of the Holy Spirit, the human spirit, and dark spirits

Encounter students learn the Bible describes multiple manifestations of the Holy Spirit that can express themselves through crying tears, laughing incredible amounts of laughter, physical shaking, or often, just a wonderful sense of peace.
