In his new book, Herbeck writes about his wife, Debbie Herbeck, giving a confirmation talk on Catholic identity to parents at an Ann Arbor area parish. Suddenly, two young mothers stood up, calling his wife “a hater” for accurately describing Catholic teachings — at Church.
“After the mother finished her tirade, no one said a word,” Herbeck writes. “No other parent responded in any way. The next morning, Debbie received an email from the person responsible for the event.
“She apologized profusely for not coming to Debbie’s defense, saying that she was so intimidated by the anger expressed by the women, she sat frozen in her seat. She was gripped by fear, the wrong kind of fear.”
