You haven’t heard a Divine Voice? Try this test: Ask yourself how often an inner voice seems to nudge you to act.

This inner voice — a combination of mother, mother-in-law, and spouse — always seems correct. You follow that “feeling?” Everything “just clicks,” or you ignore it and think, “Why didn’t I listen?”

How do you know that thought isn’t just you? Or a worse influence? Test it. St. Faustina developed a discernment method.

St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, the first saint canonized in the 21st century, spent most of the 1930s hearing and responding to voices, filling a massive diary with her conversations with Jesus Christ.

But she heard dark voices too. So she came up with a way to determine whether that inner voice nudging you is coming from one of three sources:

  • Ourselves. Your head is filled with thoughts (we make about 35,000 daily decisions), so it makes sense that most thoughts you hear are yours.
  • A demonic source. The devil is called the divider and the liar, so demonic messages are negative, trying to divide us from others. She realized a demonic voice always leads to discouragement and anxiety.
