2022 was a very challenging year for me, with flaky hips issues and recently discovered Colitis. As a result I got behind with housekeeping for Petness and Catness, and newsletters got sadly neglected.

Changes to Submission Guidelines

During that trying period I gained a clearer view of what I really want these two publications to embody and to offer readers, which is plainly put as: personal stories, fiction and poems.

And so to promote this, here are some changes to the submission guidelines that we will follow from now on.

  1. We will favour personal stories and poems about your relationships with your cats over pieces that give advice or provide ‘how-to’ instructions. We may still consider other types of stories if they are well-researched and backed by studies, but preference will be given to the personal ones.

Here are two excellent examples of personal stories:

From Nancy Parish her story of adopting two kitties

From Gareth Willey 😊 all about his new kitten

We encourage authors of articles giving advice about pet care, diet, training, or breed specific information to submit to one of the many other Medium publications. Here is one that I know of: PetTalks https://medium.com/pet-talks, which accepts this type of article.

2. We require authors to submit unpublished drafts only.

We previously accepted stories already published to the authors own profile. This is no longer the case.

Suggestions for writers

Articles in list form

We don’t like to dictate style and form to writers, but we feel that articles that are presented in list form detract from the writing ability of the author, and do not enhance the subject.

Images

In the same spirit, we recommend providing an eye-catching image at the beginning of the article.

We look forward to getting lots of stories, photos and poems from all of you in the coming months.

Special thanks to Elizaveta Semenova for her suggestions in this Newsletter.
