Like most couples, my wife Kazumi and I do not agree on everything. However, we concur that our cat Muffin is beautiful, joyful, gentle, and the best thing that has happened to us this decade.

Simply put, Muffin is delightful.

Kazumi and Muffin live one thousand miles away from me. The human members of our family usually text each other multiple times per day, so I was surprised when Kazumi called on a recent evening.

She said Muffin had experienced multiple vomiting and diarrhea sessions since she returned home from work. Our little girl’s condition worried us both. Now, in her 27th month and 23rd in our family, she had never shown a sign of illness.

The following afternoon, Kazumi took Muffin to her veterinarian.

An examination and x-ray indicated that a foreign object was lodged in Muffin’s intestine and that the intestine was twisted in two places. The doctor advised Kazumi to take the cat to an emergency animal hospital a 45-minute drive away.

A vet at the hospital said Muffin might need to stay for a few days and may require surgery to remove the foreign object and straighten the intestine.
