An age-old question, finally answered …

Nothing in life beats having a cat.

No matter how stressful your day has been, no matter how many times people who inexplicably found themselves in positions of authority have barked orders at you — all those unpleasant encounters are but a distant memory as soon as you enter your home to be greeted by the calming purr of your beloved cat.

Or so I’ve been told.

I guess this is as good a time as any for a confession. I have what might be referred to as a small credibility issue as a writer on a cat-related platform.

I don’t have a cat.

I wouldn’t blame you if you immediately suspected me of being a secret agent for Big Puppy and reported me to the proper authorities in order to get me arrested, or — even worse — banned from Medium. But please hear me out.

There are things in life we can only appreciate with a certain amount of distance.

The romanticized idea of the “freedom” we supposedly had growing up only seems appealing once we’re stressed-out adults and have forgotten all the insecurities of our teenage selves. Life at a farm might seem to be the pinnacle of leisure to tourists from the city — a perspective rarely available to the actual farmers who have to work there all day. And the inherent beauty of kitty litter might only reveal itself to those of us who don’t immediately associate it with a cat taking a shit.

Thus freed from the practical everyday concerns that inevitably present themselves to the cat owner, I submit to you that I — the catless cat enthusiast — am in a prime position to answer the question at hand: Should you buy kitty litter even if you don’t have a cat at home?

The answer to this question is fairly complex, but it can be boiled down to the following: Yes, you should. Always have some kitty litter at home.
