Prissy and Punkin — my two little used-to-be-feral girls

I had a deal with the five outside feral kittens.

Until two little girls went and changed our pact.

A year and a half ago, feral Mama Kitty had another litter of kittens under the house. This was her third litter. We’d been trying to catch her for a few years to no avail. She was too crafty and clever to fall for the feral trap we had, managing to thwart our attempts to get her fixed.

She was a very good mother. Fierce and protective. Always nursing and nurturing her little ones. Watching for threats — like us humans.

Until she was done. One day she was a nursing Mama Bear. Then, POOF.

She’d simply disappear, leaving her tykes behind.

We had too many cats inside. Crazy Cat Lady. Yes, that was me now. By now, the ones we’d taken in over the years, from injuries and illnesses, and being abandoned too young had filled up the inside of the house to cat capacity.

There was no more room in the Inn.

But…kittens…

Even though they scattered at my appearance and wanted nothing to do with me, we made a deal. I told them if they kept the rats and mice at bay, I’d keep their bowl full…
