The cats who called a University campus their home

On that rainy morning, I saw this grey cat by the bluffs, near the sea fig ground cover. I was surprised to see a cat in a bustling university campus. Don’t cats usually like solitude and indoors?

As always, I had my DSLR camera in my backpack. I took as many pictures as I desired. I was worried about the cat. Was she lost? Did she escape from the nearby student dormitories?

I am not sure how I came across it, but I stumbled upon a Facebook page about campus cats. It was a treasure trove of information about cats who call the campus home. Several cats live in different parts of the campus.

This particular cat was named Hermione. She lived in a nook between the campus bookstore and the Mathematics department. I guess the location justified the name Hermione.

Apart from Hermione, other regular campus cats were Buddy, BJ, Orion, Darcy, and Raven. Many other cats kept coming and going.

To not let their population explode, they were spayed and neutered. Volunteers fed them daily. It’s to discourage them from trash can scavenging.

It was my favorite pastime to spend some time in the beautiful campus practicing nature photography. If I spotted one of these campus cats, it was very rewarding.
