“What do you mean it isn’t tax-deductible? It serves a work-related purpose.”

Who knew the IRS took such a hard stance on business-related deductions? Or that office furniture purchases need to relate to the comfort of humans — not felines. (If you somehow manage to sneak your cat onto the payroll, things might go differently)

For now, though, the single most crucial chair in my office — and the most impulsive purchase I made when setting up my freelance writing business — doesn’t appear on my annual tax report.

Despite my best efforts.

The Desktop Dance

My workspace has always served as communal feline property. When I finally saved enough to purchase a genuine desk, finding one large enough to accommodate my desktop computer only served as half the equation. I needed something grander than the cheap folding table I’d coped with since college. I wanted an impressive piece of furniture capable of supporting all of my electronic peripherals — and a cat or two.

As long as I’d dabbled with writing, I’d found a curious feline observing the process. And since the old table didn’t offer room for a cat editor, they often squabbled over my limited lap space.
