Isn’t it funny how history repeats itself?

In May of 2016 our household was turned inside out by the unexpected arrival of Bernie Uncle Ernie, a pint-sized tabby I rescued from a Big Lots store in Millington, Tennessee.

When I brought him home, he was greeted with howls of protest from our four elderly resident cats who weren’t amused by the presence of the tiny yellow hurricane.

Over the years the seniors — aged 18 through 20 — succumbed one-by-one to age related illnesses. Mooch, the oldest of our two rescue dogs, also passed, leaving behind his goofy but affable brother, Mojo.

By the summer of 2020 our pet family was comprised of just Mojo and Bernie.

On the first day of August — a bright, sunny Saturday — our doorbell rang. Standing on the porch was our neighbor Sharon, cradling in one hand a tiny black and white bundle.

She explained the kitten had been wandering the far end of the cove the previous evening, trying to attract the attention of someone — anyone — who might rescue her from…
