Member-only story
Ten years ago, while walking to work, I saw a little kitten huddled under a huge SUV. The vehicle was on the road and about to drive forward, but I ran up and frantically tapped on the window, yelling for the vehicle to stop.
The driver looked at me, confused. I hurriedly picked up the 2-month-old kitten and showed the furry bundle to the driver, who laughed.
Once the kitten was safely in my arms, the SUV drove away.
When I held the kitten up to my eye level to take a good look at her and make sure she wasn’t harmed, a smug look washed across her face. She didn’t care at all that she had just cheated death.
Nine lives and all that.
The kitten had striking green eyes with dark swirls of color that reminded me of an expensive marble countertop. Her soft, messy fur was the color of café con leche. The dark brown tips on her tails, ears, and paws made her look wild and mischievous.
