The 1st December saw the London Heat and final round of KPMG’s Best British Mobile Startup 2017 take place. Hosted at Cass Business School, the event was the culmination of this years UK regional heats’ and brought together some of the most exciting mobile startups to come out of Britain.

Now in its third year, the event, organised by KPMG’s Enterprise department, showcases the rapid growth of mobile platform applications. Based on a pitch format, a panel formed of industry experts and the attending audience see the 10 finalists of the regional heats, who are allotted 4 minutes only for their pitch. The panel then decide the winning pitch by the end of the night.

Opening the event, Professor Marianne Lewis addressed the importance of the mobile ecosystem for helping accelerate knowledge creation and talent. In this light, here are the three pitches that most excited and inspired us here at Causr:

SAM Labs @samlabs — A startup which is truly anticipating and preparing for the ‘internet of things’, SAM Labs is pushing the concept of ‘mixed reality’, which essentially allows for conventional games, gadgets and DIY products and processes to be smarter. Described by Forbes as “robotic Lego”, SAM Labs engineers small “SAM blocks” that have specific functions, like buttons, lights, sensors and motors for example, which are connected to an app that allows for even the least techy of us to programme. The most exciting features allows kids and big kids alike, to put together their own motorised toys which they can then control at the touch of a button. You can visit them at https://www.samlabs.com.

BodyTrak @bodytrak_core — BodyTrak has engineered a truly innovative wearable health monitoring device in the form of a tiny, non-invasive earpiece, which is able to monitor and track core vitals such as body temperature and heart-rate, for example. The startup believes that they are on the cusp of a wearables revolution in sports and have already partnered with Leicester City FC in order to improve training and performance. Combining a smart hardware and analytics component, the app delivers easy to read and interpret data through an intuitive user interface. You can visit them at https://twitter.com/Bodytrak_Core.

Your.MD @yourdotmd — An incredibly ambitious and passionate venture, Your.MD aims to deliver AI propelled health advice to users, globally, in order to decrease arduous and unnecessary visits to the GP and provide a tangible guide on what kind of treatment to seek. Offered on smartphones as well as cheaper low end mobiles through a SMS text service, this app wants to offer itself as a platform for users in developed countries by cutting unnecessary visits and costs. In developing countries, where basic healthcare services and advice is hard to come by, this app is potentially a vital tool for healthcare practitioners. Built on the NHS information database and consulted with professional medical practitioners, Your.MD sees itself as your personal health assistant. You can visit them at http://www.your.md.

Whilst it was AppyParking who were crowned the winners of the evening who will go through to Mobile World Congress in 2017. Congratulations to all of the finalists and the winners. As people keep saying ‘there’s an App for that’ whilst it’s a crowded space and we’re just at the beginning of our journey it brilliant to be part of such a vibrant and exciting ecosystem.
