Starting to Explore Freire
Having lived exclusively (unless one believes in reincarnation) as a straight white male from a wealthy nation, it is safe to say that I don’t truly know what it is to be oppressed. Having said that, I’m not entirely blinkered, and I’ve seen the barriers of systematic oppression be tested by the recent advent of social media. Rather than relying on those in power for information, the general populace is more enabled than ever to make its voice heard, and what we’ve been hearing is a scream. That sound is pouring through the cracks of a fragmented societal structure that is surely capable of change. As Freire notes, we don’t necessarily have to accept the world as it is and, more crucially, we don’t have to live according to our animal instincts. An age is dawning in which anyone can question anything, and the possibilities are endless.
