C-BEN President Charla Long traveled to Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) in July 2022 to support their CBE efforts. Joining Long was Dr. Laurie Dodge, provost at University of Massachusetts Global. The goals for the visit included exploring competency-based learning and integrating it into international institutions.

Long facilitated sessions on topics that are integral to CBE, including work-based learning, credit for prior learning, and a three-hour mock assessment session for the faculty. On the final day, discussions centered on combining these concepts and creating a robust competency-based learning journey.

Singapore has data prepared that is primed for CBE, including information that identifies competencies by utilizing a skills framework for each job. Information like performance expectations and job descriptions is available, which is critical for CBE. Long shared: “We can learn a lot about the way Singapore and SIT is positioning itself for a transition to CBE. They’ve already taken many steps that are crucial for a CBE transition.”

C-BEN’s work with SIT is just beginning, with future goals to support in building out their curriculum, writing assessment tools, and coaching faculty on formulating performance-based assessments.

SIT has been virtually attending CBExchange since 2020, and C-BEN was happy to welcome individuals to the U.S.-based conference in person this year. While in the U.S. for CBExchange 2022, representatives from SIT were able to travel to C-BEN member institutions and see CBE practices in action. Long shared: “We are proud to have Singapore in the network and are excited to see where our collective efforts lead as CBE continues to grow across the globe.”
